Radon & Granite Countertops
Lately there has been a lot of media attention regarding Radon & Radiation in granite countertops. We at KPC have seen no legitimate reason for concern on this matter. The fact is, most building products emit Radon and Radiation, many building products as well as soil and drinking water emit substantially more than most granites. But the media does not report this because of the marketing blitz by opposing industries to the granite countertop industry, which is aggressively trying to gain their share of the market by this sort of propaganda. Certain large corporations that manufacture competing products of granite countertops are directly responsible for the needless public hysteria of Radon/Radiation in granite countertops. KPC tile & Stone does not at this time offer Radon Free certification, or testing of granite for Radon or Radiation, because there is no way for information of this type to be used as a standard to signify how it effects individual homes. Many building products will affect the levels of Radon and Radiation in a particular home, as well as the soil under and around the home, and drinking water entering the home through faucets. The amount these products affect an individual building's Radon/Radiation level is directly linked to the size/volume and the air circulation of a particular building. The EPA, as well as many other scientists with extensive backgrounds in Radon and Radiation have released many statements showing the Radon/Radiation levels of granite countertops do not significantly contribute to the Radon/Radiation levels in homes and buildings. Radon and Radiation are all around us, there is no way to eliminate the products that emit it. The EPA recommends testing of all homes for Radon, and if levels in your home are high, you should have a mitigation system installed by a professional. They do not recommend removing products that emit Radon from your home. There wouldn't be much left.
